Why grind a cherry tree stump?
Cherry stumps are graded after felling because they sucker aggressively from shallow lateral roots. A medium-hard cherry stump (Janka ~950 lbf) left in the ground will throw 5 to 15 new shoots within 6 to 12 months. Grinding to 200–250mm below grade severs the rootstock crown and stops regrowth.
Ornamental cherries (Prunus serrulata, Prunus 'Kanzan') and wild cherry (Prunus avium) both behave the same way. The shoots emerge in a ring up to 3 metres from the original trunk, push through lawn and beds, and regrow into a thicket within two seasons if ignored. Grinding is the only mechanical fix that reliably stops the cycle.
The other reason to grind is replanting. Cherry leaves replant disease in the soil — see the final section — so most homeowners use a stump removal as the moment to redesign the bed entirely.
How much does cherry tree stump grinding cost?
Cherry tree stump grinding costs £100 to £180 for a typical 12–24 inch garden stump in 2026. Smaller ornamental cherry stumps under 10 inches start at £85. The medium-hard wood adds 10–15% to softwood stump grinding pricing but cherry grinds faster than oak or beech.
Old wild cherry standards in Kent orchards or woodland edges run larger — 24 to 36 inches across — and price at £180–£280. Multi-stump jobs on the same visit (common on old orchard clearances) drop to 35% off per additional stump after the first.
Will a cherry tree stump grow back?
Yes — cherry stumps regrow more often than most species. Both wild cherry and ornamental cherries sucker from lateral roots up to 3–4 metres from the stump. Grinding 200–250mm below grade kills the crown; isolated suckers may still appear for 12–18 months and need pulling.
This is why cherry shares a regrowth profile with willow, plum and poplar — all are Prunus or root-suckering species. We grind cherry stumps 50mm deeper than the standard 150mm to remove the entire crown plate. For badly suckering rootstocks (often older grafted ornamentals) we recommend a glyphosate cut-stump treatment on any new shoots that emerge in the first growing season.
How long does it take to grind a cherry stump?
An 18-inch cherry stump takes 25 to 45 minutes to grind. Smaller ornamental cherries take 15–25 minutes. Mature wild cherry stumps over 24 inches need 45–75 minutes because the wood is medium-hard and the lateral roots often need grinding out separately. See our grinding duration guide for size-by-size timings.
Cherry wood is forgiving for the cutter — softer than oak (1,360 lbf Janka) and similar to walnut. Carbide teeth chew through it without resharpening between jobs, which is why cherry never carries the hardwood surcharge that oak or beech does.
What is the best time to remove a cherry tree stump?
The best time to grind a cherry stump is autumn or winter (October to March) when sap is down and lawn damage is minimal. Stumps over 3 months old grind 20% faster because the wood has dried. Avoid May to July if cherries are flowering nearby — bees use them heavily.
Cherry is part of the fruit tree stump removal cluster we work on across Kent, the Garden of England. Old orchard clearances in Sittingbourne, Faversham and Chartham are best scheduled November to February, when ground is firm but not frozen and orchards are dormant.
Can I replant in the same spot?
Yes, but not with another cherry, plum, or almond. Cherry leaves a soil condition called replant disease (Specific Apple Replant Disease in the Prunus family) that stunts new Prunus species for 5–7 years. Replant with apple, pear, ornamental shrubs or grass. If you must replant cherry, excavate the chips and add 300mm of fresh topsoil.
Grinding leaves a 50/50 mix of fine wood chips and soil in the hole. For a lawn, level it with topsoil and seed. For a new bed, scoop out the chips (they will lock up nitrogen for 12 months as they decompose) and backfill with compost-amended topsoil. We can quote chip removal as a £25–£50 add-on if you want a clean planting hole the same day.
